Imagine walking into your school classroom and finding fun tools to build creative projects, practice digital design, and explore your favourite talents instead of simply reading textbooks. On Saturday, 17 October 2026, Kerala General Education Minister N. Samsudheen announced an exciting plan to introduce skill development in Kerala schools. These brand-new centres will begin welcoming young learners starting right from the upper primary level.

The minister shared this happy news during the official inauguration of a new school building in Thazhekkode village panchayat, located in Malappuram district. The government wants to ensure that children across Kerala have access to modern, high-quality learning environments that make studying both practical and fun from an early age.

What happened?

During the event, Minister Samsudheen explained that the new skill development centres are created to spot and nurture students’ natural talents, practical abilities, and aptitudes early in their schooling. Instead of waiting until college or high school, boys and girls in upper primary classes will be able to test their ideas and try out hands-on activities. The minister said that the main goal of this initiative is to provide quality education that helps Indian students compete effectively on a global stage.

This big step is part of a broader effort to transform everyday school learning. The state is moving away from traditional textbook memorisation and turning classrooms into places of real-world practice. In addition, as part of the state government’s ongoing 100-day action plan, single-teacher schools are actively being upgraded into lower primary schools. This helps ensure that younger pupils get better classrooms and more support.

Students in Malappuram district received another piece of great news as well. The state government has sanctioned 60 additional Plus One, or Class 11, batches across the district to give more teenagers the opportunity to continue into higher secondary schooling.

The minister also highlighted how school lessons will be modernised through an initiative called “Digital Square”. Under this project, interactive digital classrooms are planned across roughly 6,000 lower and upper primary schools for students studying in Classes 1 through 7. This digital curriculum will introduce young learners to artificial intelligence (AI), educational software, creative digital design tools, and introductory programming.

Why does it matter to you?

Have you ever felt tired of only reading sentences from a textbook and answering written exam questions? These new centres mean you will not just learn theories from pages, but you will also get to discover your unique practical talents through hands-on practice, coding exercises, and creative design tools.

Starting practical training and lessons in artificial intelligence during your primary school years helps you build real-world confidence early on. When you understand how computer tools, programming, and design software work, you become a creator rather than just a user. This helpful foundation prepares you for exciting future careers and shows you how your school lessons connect directly to the wider world.
